Facebook lead ads to Klaviyo: set it up without losing leads

The Facebook lead ads Klaviyo integration sends everyone who fills out your Meta lead form straight into a Klaviyo list, in real time, through Klaviyo's Meta Ads app. You connect each lead ad to one list, choose whether those people are subscribed to email, SMS, both or neither, and Klaviyo creates or updates a profile for every lead.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Set it up in Klaviyo under Integrations > Meta Ads > Lead ads. Each connection is one lead ad, one list and one subscription setting.
  • Leads sync in real time going forward. There's no historical sync, so leads collected before you connect have to be exported from Meta and imported.
  • Klaviyo doesn't read your form's consent checkboxes. Only subscribe people to the channels your form actually asks consent for.
  • If the list uses double opt-in, leads aren't added until they confirm. For email, I'd put lead ad signups on a single opt-in list so they hit your welcome series immediately.
  • A lead ad can only be used in one sync, so plan which list each ad feeds before you launch.

This is for Shopify founders running (or about to run) Facebook or Instagram lead ads who want those leads to land in Klaviyo and get emailed right away, not sit in a CSV in Meta.

What does the Facebook lead ads Klaviyo integration actually do?

Meta lead ads let someone sign up without leaving Facebook or Instagram. They tap the ad, a form opens, and they submit. On its own, that lead sits inside Meta.

Klaviyo's Meta Ads integration pulls those sign-ups across. Per Klaviyo's help center:

  • Each new lead is added to the list you picked for that lead ad.
  • Every lead gets a Filled Out Lead Ad event on their profile, which you can use to trigger a flow or build a segment.
  • If the email already exists in Klaviyo, the lead is matched to the existing profile instead of creating a duplicate.
  • Answers to your form questions are saved as custom properties on the profile.
  • Lead ad data syncs in real time. (The integration's other half, custom audiences, syncs every 24 to 48 hours. That's a different feature, covered in my Klaviyo Meta audience sync post.)

So the integration does two jobs: it gets the person into a list, and it tells Klaviyo they came from a lead ad. Both matter for what happens next.

How do you connect Facebook lead ads to Klaviyo?

Here's the setup as Klaviyo describes it.

Before you start: the person connecting needs Facebook access with full control of the Facebook Page the lead ads run from.

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Integrations and add or open the Meta Ads app.
  2. When you install it, choose custom audiences, lead ads, or both, and select the Facebook Page your lead ads belong to.
  3. Open the Lead ads tab and add a connection.
  4. Pick the lead ad, the list those leads should join, and the subscription setting (more on that below).
  5. Click Save.

Repeat for each lead ad. Klaviyo says a lead ad can be used in only one sync, so you can't send the same ad to two lists. If you want different groups on different lists, that's a different ad.

Field names matter too. Klaviyo maps standard Meta fields such as email, first_name, last_name, full_name and phone_number. Stick to Meta's standard contact fields for anything you want to land in the right place on the profile.

Which list should lead ad leads join?

This is the decision that decides whether the integration makes you money.

Most of the people filling out a lead form are non-customers who saw a cold ad. They've never bought from you. That's the same person who fills out a signup popup on your site, and they should get the same treatment: straight into the list that triggers your welcome series.

That's where the money is. Across 4 consumable brands I work with, welcome email #1 earns about $4.50 per person. Emails #2 to #5 earn about $0.10 each. The first email a new subscriber gets is the one they're most likely to act on, and it works best while they still remember why they signed up.

So I'd point lead ads at your main signup list, or at a dedicated lead ads list that triggers the same welcome flow. If you use a separate list, you can still use the Filled Out Lead Ad event or the list itself to adjust the first email, for example by referencing the offer from the ad. How I build that series is in the welcome email series, and how I split customers from non-customers inside it is in customer vs non-customer email flows.

What I wouldn't do is sync leads to a list that triggers nothing. A lead that sits untouched for a week has mostly forgotten the ad.

Carefully. This is where brands get it wrong.

When you add a connection, Klaviyo asks how to subscribe the leads: Subscribe to email, Subscribe to text, both, or Do not subscribe. Per Klaviyo's help center:

  • Klaviyo "does not check each lead's checkbox answers." Whatever you choose applies to every lead from that ad.
  • "An email address or phone number alone does not establish consent." Collecting a phone number on the form doesn't mean you can text it.
  • So only choose the channels your lead form actually collects consent for.
  • Do not subscribe adds people to the list without changing their consent status.
  • For SMS, you need SMS turned on in Klaviyo and an active sending number.

The safe rule: if the form doesn't clearly ask for permission to text, the connection is email only. SMS is a more acute, more urgent channel, so the commitment to be on that list has to be real. If you're still deciding whether SMS is worth it, I cover that in should I add SMS marketing. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your form's consent language with whoever handles compliance for you.

Does double opt-in affect lead ad signups?

Yes. Klaviyo says that if the list uses double opt-in, the profile isn't added until the person confirms, and the confirmation email "may take up to an hour to send."

Think about what that means for a lead ad. Someone taps your ad while scrolling, submits the form in two taps, and goes back to their feed. Up to an hour later, they get an email asking them to confirm. Many won't. And anyone who doesn't confirm never joins the list and never gets your welcome series.

That's why I use single opt-in for email. A non-customer coming in from a cold ad shouldn't hit extra layers that may stop them from placing an order. If someone entered their email, they clearly want to be on the list. I walk through the full reasoning in Klaviyo double opt-in.

Why aren't my Facebook leads showing up in Klaviyo?

Most missing leads come down to a handful of setup issues. Going by Klaviyo's documentation, check these in order:

  1. The leads came in before you connected. There's no historical sync. Leads collected earlier have to be exported from Meta and imported into Klaviyo.
  2. The list uses double opt-in. The leads exist but haven't confirmed, so they aren't on the list yet.
  3. Page access. Lead ad syncs need full control of the Facebook Page. If whoever connected the integration lost that access, the Page or ad may not appear.
  4. The ad isn't connected. Each lead ad needs its own connection. A new ad you launched last week isn't covered by last month's connection.
  5. The ad is already used in another sync. One lead ad, one sync.
  6. SMS isn't set up. If you chose to subscribe leads to text, you need SMS on and an active sending number.

A simple habit catches most of this: after you launch any new lead ad, submit a test lead yourself and look for the Filled Out Lead Ad event on your profile in Klaviyo.

Are lead ads worth it for a Shopify brand?

They can be, but judge them by what the leads buy, not how many there are. A cheap lead that never engages costs you twice, once in ad spend and again on your Klaviyo bill.

Two things help:

  • Offer what you'd offer on site. The same welcome offer from your popup keeps things consistent. If you're open to testing it, brands offering cash back on the signup popup instead of a discount see 10 to 20% higher first-order profit, because non-customers still place a first order. More on that in email popup discounts.
  • Send to engaged people, not everyone. Lead ad signups who never engage after the welcome series shouldn't stay in every campaign forever. Engaged segments and a sunset flow keep list quality up. My approach is in email segmentation for ecommerce.

Lead ads are one input. The rest of my list growth playbook is in how to grow your email list.

What should you set up first?

Before your next lead ad goes live:

  1. Install Klaviyo's Meta Ads app with an account that has full control of the Page.
  2. Add a lead ads connection for each ad, pointed at a single opt-in list that triggers your welcome series.
  3. Set the subscription to email only, unless your form clearly collects SMS consent.
  4. Submit a test lead and confirm it shows up with the Filled Out Lead Ad event.
  5. Export any leads Meta collected before the connection and import them.

FAQ

Does Klaviyo integrate with Facebook lead ads?

Yes. Klaviyo's Meta Ads app syncs lead ad sign-ups into a Klaviyo list of your choice. Set it up under Integrations, Meta Ads, then the Lead ads tab.

How fast do Facebook leads sync to Klaviyo?

Klaviyo says lead ad data syncs in real time. Custom audiences, the other part of the Meta integration, sync every 24 to 48 hours.

Will old Facebook leads sync to Klaviyo?

No. There's no historical sync. Export earlier leads from Meta and import them into Klaviyo.

Are lead ad signups subscribed to email automatically?

Only if you choose that in the connection. Klaviyo applies your subscription choice to every lead from that ad and doesn't read the form's checkboxes, so pick only the channels your form collects consent for.

Can I trigger a flow from a Facebook lead ad?

Yes. Use the list the leads join as the flow trigger, or the Filled Out Lead Ad event Klaviyo adds to each lead's profile.
