Klaviyo Shopify integration not working? Check these 5 things

If your Klaviyo Shopify integration isn't working, check five things in this order: whether the integration needs to be re-authenticated, whether the Klaviyo app embed is on in your theme, how subscriber sync is set up, whether order events are arriving, and whether TikTok Shop orders are filling your account with profiles you can't really email. Each check takes a few minutes, and Klaviyo's own help pages tell you exactly what to look for.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Klaviyo's fix for a stalled sync is to update or re-authenticate the connection under Integrations, then Shopify, and not leave the page until you've confirmed.
  • A new Shopify theme doesn't carry the Klaviyo app embed over, so onsite tracking (and the flows built on it) stops until you turn it back on.
  • After the first historical sync, new Shopify data syncs to Klaviyo in real time, so a test order should show up on your own profile quickly.
  • TikTok Shop orders can create profiles with @scs.tiktokw.us addresses. Filter them out of flows and suppress them.
  • When a send shows revenue but zero clicks, assume tracking broke and go find it.

This is for Shopify founders who noticed a flow went quiet, revenue numbers that look off, or a list that grew with addresses nobody signed up with.

1. Is the Klaviyo Shopify integration still connected?

Start here, because nothing else works without it. Per Klaviyo's troubleshooting page, if your integration isn't syncing, go to Integrations, then Shopify, and click Update Settings (or Re-Authenticate with Shopify if your credentials expired). Complete Shopify's prompts, then click Update Integration. Klaviyo says to finish that confirmation before leaving the page, because your new connection details aren't saved until you confirm. Wait for the "Integration updated" message, then check the most recent event, like Placed Order, against what's actually happening in your store.

If you get "We are unable to update your integration settings at this time," Klaviyo lists three causes:

  • Wrong store URL. It should look like mystore.myshopify.com, not your custom domain.
  • Frozen store. An unpaid balance, a plan issue or an expired trial. Fix it in Shopify first, then try again.
  • Klaviyo app removed. Check that the Klaviyo app is still installed in Shopify.

Two more notes from the same page. Klaviyo supports one Shopify store per Klaviyo account. And a notice about a failed periodic sync can stick around after you've fixed things. Klaviyo says to ignore it unless your data is still delayed.

2. Why did Klaviyo onsite tracking stop working?

Usually because of a theme change. This one breaks quietly.

Klaviyo's onsite tracking runs through an app embed in your Shopify theme. Per Klaviyo, if you add a new theme, onsite tracking won't work until you re-enable the app embed for that theme. So a redesign can switch off tracking and nobody notices until a flow goes quiet.

That matters because Active on Site and Viewed Product come from the app embed. Browse abandonment and site abandonment flows run on those events, so no embed means no trigger. If you want to see where those flows sit in a full build, I lay out the system in Klaviyo flows for CPG brands.

Here's Klaviyo's test, once the embed is on:

  1. Wait about 15 minutes after turning the embed on.
  2. Add ?utm_email= plus your email address to the end of your homepage URL and load it.
  3. Visit a product page.
  4. Find your profile in Klaviyo and look for Active on Site and Viewed Product in the activity feed.

If you're setting this up from scratch, the whole install is in Klaviyo setup for Shopify.

3. Why aren't Shopify subscribers syncing to my Klaviyo list?

Most often, the sync setting is off or pointed at the wrong list.

In Klaviyo's Shopify integration, the subscriber settings live under Sync settings, then From Shopify. That's where you decide whether people who accept marketing in Shopify come into Klaviyo, and which list they land on. If that sync is off, or it's pointed at a list your welcome flow doesn't use, new subscribers land somewhere you're not looking and never get your welcome series.

SMS works differently. Per Klaviyo, you set up text messaging in Klaviyo first, and SMS consent only syncs for people subscribing to SMS in Shopify for the first time.

Sending data back to Shopify is a separate setting, under Sync settings, then To Shopify. Be careful with it: Klaviyo notes that choosing "All profiles" creates Shopify customers for every Klaviyo profile that doesn't already exist there. Syncing only profiles that already exist in Shopify is the safer choice.

One more: if you moved from another email platform, Klaviyo says to disconnect the old one from Shopify first. Otherwise double opt-in emails can go out to your existing list.

4. Why isn't Klaviyo syncing my Shopify orders?

Check whether the events are arriving before you assume they aren't. Klaviyo's Shopify data reference says that after the first historical sync, new data syncs in real time. Go to Analytics, then Metrics, and set the Integration filter to Shopify to see what's coming in. Then place a test order and look for Placed Order on your own profile.

Some things look broken but aren't, per Klaviyo:

  • Historical data takes time. On a new connection, Klaviyo syncs the last 90 days first, then older data (up to 10 years by default), which can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days.
  • Events don't update later. Klaviyo doesn't re-sync a metric after the first event, so changes like order tags added afterward won't show.
  • Revenue won't match Shopify. Shopify subtracts cancelled and refunded orders. Klaviyo doesn't.

That last one is the source of most "Klaviyo's numbers are wrong" conversations. The two tools are counting different things. If the gap is bigger than refunds and cancellations can explain, that's when to dig in.

5. Why are TikTok Shop customers on my Klaviyo list?

If you sell on TikTok Shop through Shopify, look for this. In a Klaviyo Community thread, a store owner said TikTok Shop customers had always synced into Klaviyo as profiles through Shopify. Then they started landing on the newsletter list too, even though, as the store owner put it, there was no way to sign up when going through TikTok Shop. The workaround in the thread keys off addresses ending in @scs.tiktokw.us.

The workaround suggested in the thread, marked solved:

  • Add a filter to every live flow: Email does not contain @scs.tiktokw.us.
  • Build a segment of profiles where Email contains @scs.tiktokw.us, exclude it from campaigns, and suppress it.

Klaviyo's community managers explained that Klaviyo mirrors the subscription status Shopify sends, and that if the TikTok checkout has a subscription box, those profiles can sync as subscribed. The root cause wasn't confirmed, and the advice was to contact Shopify support about the TikTok connection.

There's a billing side too. Profiles you aren't really marketing to can still affect what you pay, so suppressing them is worth doing. I explain how that works in why did my Klaviyo bill go up.

How do you know when the integration broke?

The reports don't always tell you. A broken integration rarely throws an error. It just quietly sends less, or reports numbers that don't add up.

Here's a real one. A strength training gear brand sent a restock email that hit a 0.40% click rate, double their other sends, and the email showed $0 in revenue. Looking across their account, about 20 sends showed opens and revenue but zero clicks. Those weren't great emails or terrible ones. That was tracking that broke.

So treat odd numbers as a signal, not a curiosity:

  • Clicks with no sales, or sales with no clicks: assume something in tracking or the integration broke, and go find it. I walk through how in email clicks but no sales.
  • A flow that suddenly sends fewer emails: check the app embed and the trigger metric before you touch the emails.
  • A list growing faster than your forms explain: look at where the new profiles came from, starting with TikTok Shop.

Since a theme change, an app change or a new sales channel can each cause one of these, it's worth running the five checks above after any of those changes, not only when something looks wrong. My full list of what to review is in the Klaviyo audit checklist.

FAQ

How do I reconnect Klaviyo to Shopify?

Per Klaviyo, go to Integrations, then Shopify, and click Update Settings (or Re-Authenticate with Shopify). Complete Shopify's prompts and click Update Integration. Don't leave the page before you confirm, or the new details won't save. Look for the "Integration updated" message.

Why isn't Klaviyo syncing my Shopify orders?

Check that the integration is connected, then look under Analytics, then Metrics, filtered to the Shopify integration. Place a test order and check your own profile. On a new connection, Klaviyo syncs the last 90 days first, then older history, which can take from a few minutes to several days.

Why did onsite tracking stop after I changed my theme?

The Klaviyo app embed doesn't carry over to a new theme. Per Klaviyo, you have to turn it back on in the new theme's app embeds and save.

Why don't Klaviyo and Shopify revenue match?

Shopify subtracts cancelled and refunded orders from its numbers. Klaviyo doesn't.

Can I connect two Shopify stores to one Klaviyo account?

Not currently, per Klaviyo. Each store needs its own Klaviyo account.
