Klaviyo vs Shopify Email: which should your store use?

For most Shopify brands that sell something people reorder, I'd pick Klaviyo. I trust them, their stuff connects with everything, it keeps email and SMS in the same house, and it's where I build every flow I install. But Shopify Email (now called Shopify Messaging) is cheaper, built into your admin, and genuinely fine for a very small store that's just getting started. This is for Shopify founders deciding where to run email, from first sale to about $20M a year.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 emails a month free, then $1 per 1,000 emails, with no monthly commitment.
  • Klaviyo prices by active profiles: $20 a month for 500, $150 for 10,000, and each tier includes 10x its profile count in monthly sends.
  • On cost alone, Shopify Email wins at almost every list size. On what you can build and connect, Klaviyo wins.
  • If you're very small, Shopify Email is a fine place to start. Once a reorder flow, real segments and your other tools start to matter, move to Klaviyo.

Klaviyo vs Shopify Email: how do they compare on paper?

Two notes from Shopify's help center. Shopify Email was renamed Shopify Messaging, and to use it you need Shopify Network Intelligence turned on in your privacy settings.

What does each one cost at my size?

Here's some hypothetical math using list prices. Say you have 10,000 subscribers and send four campaigns a month plus your flows, about 50,000 emails.

  • Shopify Email: the first 10,000 are free, the other 40,000 cost $1 per 1,000. About $40 a month.
  • Klaviyo: 10,000 active profiles is $150 a month, and that includes up to 100,000 sends.

So Shopify Email is cheaper, by a lot. If price were the whole decision, this would be a short post. Your Klaviyo bill also depends on keeping your list clean, which I break down in why your Klaviyo bill went up.

When is Shopify Email good enough?

When you're small and simple. If you're doing your first few thousand dollars a month, have one or two products and a small list, Shopify Email gets you sending without another app or another bill. The templates pull in your branding, products and prices, and the pre-built welcome and winback automations cover the basics.

At that stage, the most important thing isn't the tool. It's that you're collecting emails and sending something at all. If that's you, read email marketing for small Shopify stores before you spend money on anything.

Why I'd pick Klaviyo

Shopify plus Klaviyo is the setup I know best, and that's a bias you should know about. Here's my honest take on why:

  • I trust them. When email is a third of your revenue, I want it on a platform I've seen hold up across a lot of brands. Across the brands I work with, about 32% of total revenue comes from email.
  • Their stuff connects with everything. Your reviews app, your subscription app, your ad accounts. The fewer workarounds, the fewer things break.
  • Email and SMS in the same house. I run SMS in Klaviyo for clients, so both channels sit in one place and attribution is less confusing. To be fair, Shopify Messaging does SMS too, in select countries and billed separately, so this one is closer than it looks.

A few verified Klaviyo features I lean on for consumable brands:

  • Predictive analytics. Klaviyo predicts things like a customer's expected date of next order and churn risk, once you have at least 500 customers who've ordered, 180 days of order history, orders in the last 30 days, and some customers with 3 or more orders.
  • Location segments. You can target by country, state, zip code or distance from a zip code, which is how I handle retail launches.
  • Meta audience sync. Klaviyo can push segments to Meta as custom audiences that update every hour. More in Klaviyo segments in Meta ads.

I didn't find those three on Shopify's email pages. That doesn't mean Shopify will never add them, but today they're why I build in Klaviyo.

When should I switch from Shopify Email to Klaviyo?

Here's where I'd draw the line. Move when one of these is true:

  • Your product runs out and you need a reorder flow. Across four consumable brands in my data, replenishment flows earned about $2.23 per person, about 28x the best campaign. That's not a flow I'd want to compromise on.
  • You want customers and non-customers treated differently. In the Flow System I install, each of the 8 core flows checks "Placed order ever?" at the top and splits into a customer path and a non-customer path. That's 60+ emails.
  • Your campaigns need real segments. A fitness tech brand I work with earned $0.19 per person from an engaged segment and $0.04 from a full-list blast.
  • Your other tools need to talk to email. Subscriptions, reviews, ads, or SMS that lives in the same place as your email.

If none of those are true yet, there's no rush. If two or three are, you're probably leaving money on the table by staying.

Will switching to Klaviyo increase my email revenue?

Not by itself. A new tool with the same three flows and the same full-list blasts will give you about the same result, just with a bigger bill.

The gain comes from what you build once you're there: a strong first welcome email, abandonment flows that keep going, a reorder reminder timed to when people run out, and campaigns sent to segments. In the Flow System I install, the welcome series is 6 emails over 7 days, and the offer goes in email #1 because email #1 carries most of the money: about $4.50 per person in my four-brand data, about 30x what emails #2 to #5 earned. The rest of the week builds trust before the offer expires on day 7. That's a program decision, not a platform one.

Where these numbers come from

The welcome and replenishment numbers are pooled from 4 consumable brands I work with: 2,897 campaigns and $17.7M in email revenue. It's a small sample, so treat it as directional. Platform facts come from Klaviyo's and Shopify's own pages, listed in Sources.

FAQ

Is Shopify Email free?

Partly. Shopify Messaging includes your first 10,000 emails each month free, then charges $1 per 1,000 emails, with no monthly commitment. SMS is billed separately.

Is Klaviyo better than Shopify Email?

For a consumable brand that's past the very early stage, I think so. It's what I trust, it connects with everything, and it has features like predictive analytics and location segments that I lean on. For a very small store, Shopify Email is fine to start.

Can I use Shopify Email and Klaviyo at the same time?

You can, but I wouldn't for long. Two tools sending to the same people makes it hard to control frequency and harder to tell what's working. Pick one home for email.

Is it hard to move from Shopify Email to Klaviyo?

The connection to Shopify is straightforward. The work is rebuilding your flows properly, not copying them over. I'd use the move as the moment to set up the flows you didn't have.

What about Mailchimp or Omnisend?

I've compared those separately: Klaviyo vs Mailchimp and Klaviyo vs Omnisend.
