Klaviyo vs Mailchimp: which is better for a Shopify brand?

For a Shopify brand selling something people buy again, I'd pick Klaviyo over Mailchimp. I trust them more, their stuff connects with everything, it keeps email and SMS in the same house, and the way they bill fits how a consumable brand's list actually works. Mailchimp is a solid, familiar tool with a real Shopify integration, and I'll lay out both fairly. This is for Shopify founders doing $500K to $20M a year choosing a platform or wondering if they've outgrown Mailchimp.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • My pick for Shopify consumable brands is Klaviyo. I trust them more, it connects with everything, and it keeps email and SMS in one place.
  • Klaviyo bills by active profiles, so unsubscribed and suppressed people don't count. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward your plan.
  • Both have a free plan for up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Mailchimp's free plan doesn't include its automation flows.
  • Mailchimp's Essentials plan caps automation flows at 4 steps. The cart and winback flows I install run 5 emails each.

Klaviyo vs Mailchimp: how do they compare on paper?

Here's what each company says on its own pages as of mid-October 2026. Pricing changes, so check the live pages with your real list size.

Klaviyo Mailchimp

Other plans 1,000 profiles $30; 10,000 $150; 25,000 $400; 50,000 $720; 110,000 $1,495 Standard: listed at $20 a month "for 12 months"; Premium: $350 a month
Send limits 10x your profile tier each month Essentials 10x contacts; Standard 12x; Premium 15x
Who you're billed for Active profiles; unsubscribed and suppressed don't count Subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts; archived, cleaned and deleted don't count
Automations No flow step limit listed on Klaviyo's plan pages Free: none listed. Essentials: flows up to 4 steps. Standard: up to 200 flows
Going over your limit Plan moves up a tier at the next billing cycle Extra charge on your bill, service isn't interrupted

Mailchimp's pricing page shows a contact slider but didn't show prices for specific list sizes when I checked, so I can't put a side-by-side number on 10,000 contacts. Put your real count into both pages.

What does Mailchimp's Shopify integration do?

To be fair to Mailchimp, the Shopify integration is real. Per Mailchimp's own page, it can:

  • Sync your Shopify segments to Mailchimp for email and SMS targeting
  • Use customer events from Shopify pixels to build segments on shopper behavior
  • Trigger abandoned cart, welcome and back-in-stock automations
  • Send product recommendations and best sellers
  • Create unique single-use discount codes that sync back to Shopify
  • Show campaign revenue in your Shopify dashboard

Two limits from the same page: features vary by plan, and Marketing Automation Flows are only on paid plans. Mailchimp and Shopify are also sold separately.

Why I'd pick Klaviyo

I've spent seven years building retention for Shopify brands, and Shopify plus Klaviyo is the setup I know best. That's a bias, so here's my reasoning laid out plainly.

  • I trust them more. Your email platform holds your customer list and runs your biggest sales days. I want it on the tool I trust most.
  • Their stuff connects with everything. Reviews, subscriptions, ad accounts. The fewer workarounds between your store and your email, the fewer things break.
  • Email and SMS in the same house. I run SMS in Klaviyo for clients, so both channels live in one place and attribution is less confusing. To be fair, Mailchimp offers SMS too, as an add-on in select countries.
  • The billing fits a consumable brand. You pay for people you can reach. On Mailchimp, unsubscribed contacts still count toward your plan unless you archive or clean them. That's manageable, but it's one more thing to keep on top of.
  • Long flows without plan gymnastics. In the Flow System I install, abandoned cart and winback each run 5 emails per path. In my four-brand data, cart abandonment email #5 still earned about $0.25 per person, the same as email #3, and winback email #3 earned about 2x email #1. I want room for those flows on any plan.

Klaviyo also has things I lean on for consumable brands, like predictive analytics (a customer's expected date of next order and churn risk, once you have at least 500 customers who've ordered and 180 days of order history) and location segments for retail launches. To be fair, Mailchimp's Standard plan lists predictive segments too.

When is Mailchimp a fine choice?

When email isn't really about repeat purchases. If you're a service business, a newsletter, or a store that sells a one-time product and mostly sends updates, Mailchimp does the job and a lot of people already know how to use it.

It's also fine if you're very small and already on it. Moving platforms takes time. If you're just getting started, the bigger win is collecting emails and sending at all. My email marketing for small Shopify stores post covers what I'd do first.

Should I switch from Mailchimp to Klaviyo?

If you're a Shopify brand selling something that runs out, and you're past the very early stage, I'd move. The two places I'd expect it to matter most are a reorder reminder and segmented campaigns.

Across four consumable brands in my data, replenishment flows earned about $2.23 per person, about 28x the best campaign. Only 2 of the 4 brands had one built. It's not one of the 8 core flows in my Flow System, but it's the first one I'd add on top for anything that gets used up.

But know this: switching doesn't fix a broken program. When I take over an underperforming account, the problems are flows with no intention behind them, flows that are missing or broken, and campaigns sent to everyone with no segments. Those come with you to any tool. Run through my Klaviyo audit checklist on your current setup before you decide. Most of it applies to any platform.

Where these numbers come from

The flow numbers are pooled from 4 consumable brands I work with: 2,897 campaigns and $17.7M in email revenue. It's a small sample, so treat it as directional. Platform facts come from Klaviyo's and Mailchimp's own pages, listed in Sources.

FAQ

Is Mailchimp cheaper than Klaviyo?

At the entry level, Mailchimp's Essentials plan is listed at $13 a month "for 12 months," versus Klaviyo's $20 for 500 active profiles. But Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts toward your plan and Klaviyo doesn't, so compare using your real list, including unsubscribes.

Does Mailchimp work with Shopify?

Yes. Mailchimp's Shopify integration syncs segments, uses shopper behavior from Shopify pixels, runs abandoned cart and back-in-stock automations, and shows campaign revenue in Shopify. Automation flows need a paid plan.

Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?

Yes. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts are included in your contact count. Archived, cleaned and deleted contacts aren't.

Is Klaviyo better than Mailchimp for ecommerce?

For a Shopify brand built on repeat purchases, I think so. It's the platform I trust most and it connects with everything. For a business where email is mostly newsletters, Mailchimp is fine.
