Email marketing for TikTok Shop sellers: what you can and can't do

You can't take your TikTok Shop buyers and email them marketing. TikTok's own seller rules say you can only talk to customers through its Chat tool, and the buyer emails that reach your Shopify store aren't real addresses anyway. What you can do is build a list you own from your own site and channels, and keep TikTok orders from messing up your Klaviyo account. This is for Shopify brands that sell on TikTok Shop and want email to work alongside it, not against TikTok's rules.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • TikTok Shop's US seller pages say sellers "must only communicate with customers through TikTok Shop's Chat with TikTok," and that any other form of communication is prohibited.
  • TikTok Shop orders can sync into Shopify, but the buyer email on them is an encrypted stand-in, not the buyer's real inbox.
  • Those stand-in profiles can end up in Klaviyo. Keep them out of your flows and campaigns.
  • TikTok's fulfillment guidance says to leave marketing materials out of TikTok Shop packages. Your own Shopify orders are a different story.
  • Your list grows from your own site, sign-up forms and TikTok's lead ads, which can send leads straight into a Klaviyo list.

Can I email my TikTok Shop customers?

Not for marketing. TikTok's "Customer Order Shipping Requirements" page for US sellers is blunt: "Sellers must only communicate with customers through TikTok Shop's Chat with TikTok in Seller Center." The next line: "Any other forms of communication outside of Chat with TikTok are prohibited."

The same page says sellers are "strictly prohibited from misusing sensitive customer contact information (such as full names and addresses) under any circumstances." TikTok's "Best Practices for Order Fulfillment" page adds: "Do not misuse customer contact information. All communications with customers must remain confidential."

So the plan "export TikTok buyers, upload to Klaviyo, send a welcome flow" is out. That's the same answer I gave in email marketing for Amazon sellers. Marketplaces own the buyer relationship, and they write that into the rules.

TikTok also has a separate Customer Service Policy that covers how Chat can be used. Read it in Seller Center before you use Chat for anything beyond order and service questions.

What happens to TikTok Shop orders in Shopify and Klaviyo?

If you use TikTok Shop through Shopify, orders flow back into your Shopify admin. Shopify's help center says that when an order is placed, "TikTok syncs with Shopify to check product inventory," and the order is created in Shopify when stock is available. You fulfill it from the Shopify Orders page. Refunds, returns and cancellations stay in TikTok Seller Center.

The catch is the customer details. AfterShip, which makes a TikTok Shop connector for Shopify, says in its help center: "TikTok Shop does not provide the buyer's original email, only the encrypted email." For orders TikTok ships, it says the buyer's name, phone and address are masked too.

Here's where it gets messy. A Shopify order creates a Shopify customer, and Shopify customers sync to Klaviyo. In a Klaviyo Community thread, a store owner found TikTok Shop buyers landing on their newsletter list with addresses on the @scs.tiktokw.us domain, and said those emails bounced. Klaviyo's team explained that Klaviyo syncs whatever subscription status Shopify has, so if Shopify marks those customers as subscribed, "they'll end up being subscribed in Klaviyo too." Their advice was to exclude those profiles from flows and campaigns.

How do I keep TikTok orders out of my email?

Three checks I'd run today:

  1. Look for TikTok profiles in Klaviyo. Search your profiles for the TikTok email domain. If they're on your main list, find out why in Shopify first, since that's where the subscribed status comes from.
  2. Filter your flows. Any flow that starts from a Shopify order, like post-purchase, review requests or winback, can pick up TikTok orders. Add a filter so profiles with the TikTok domain don't enter.
  3. Exclude them from campaigns. Build a segment of those profiles and exclude it from every send.

If your Shopify and Klaviyo setup is new, my Klaviyo setup for Shopify guide covers the basics these checks build on.

One warning. Don't turn this into a big list-cleaning project. Founders over-focus on cleaning the list instead of adding better profiles and systems to capture them. Exclude the TikTok placeholders once, set the filters, and put your time into growing real sign-ups.

Can I put a sign-up card in my TikTok Shop packages?

TikTok's guidance says no to marketing inserts. Its "Best Practices for Order Fulfillment" page lists this under common mistakes: "Refrain from adding marketing or promotional materials such as pamphlets." The same page says not to include "messages that ask for or incentivize positive customer reviews," and that packaging, invoices and other documents should be "unbranded and only identify your shop."

The shipping requirements page also says shipping labels "must not include hyperlinks, QR codes, contact information from other platforms."

Some third-party guides suggest a package insert with an opt-in is a safe way around the rules. TikTok's own pages say otherwise, and TikTok's pages are the ones that decide whether your shop gets a strike. My rule: don't use a TikTok Shop package to pull a buyer off TikTok.

In your own Shopify orders, inserts are yours. A card with a QR code to a sign-up page or reorder page is fair game when the order came from your own site.

Can I send TikTok viewers to my website to sign up?

Be careful here too. TikTok's "Avoid Redirecting Traffic" page applies to "all Creators on TikTok Shop using content like livestreams and videos." It lists things to avoid, including prompts to buy through "external links, usernames, websites, social media, and messaging services," QR codes that send viewers off TikTok, and sale codes for other sites. It even lists "Click on the link in my bio to shop for more products" as an example to avoid, and says to avoid adding contact information in your bio. Breaking it can get content removed or a warning on the account.

So shoppable videos and LIVEs aren't the place to say "go to our site and join the list." Here's what I'd lean on instead.

TikTok lead ads into Klaviyo

TikTok has a lead generation ad format with Instant Forms, and it integrates with Klaviyo. TikTok's help page says the integration can "sync leads collected from your TikTok Instant Forms directly to your selected Klaviyo list," and that you can map fields "including the consent records." It's TikTok's own tool, so you're not sneaking anyone off the platform.

One setting to change. TikTok says new lists created through that integration are "set to double-opt-in by default," and that admins can switch to single opt-in in Klaviyo. I would. If someone entered their email, they want to be on the list. I use single opt-in for email unless there's a very specific reason not to.

Your own site

People who see you on TikTok search for your brand. When they land on your Shopify site, a sign-up form with a real offer is what turns that visit into a profile you own. My guide to growing an email list covers forms, offers and placement.

Klaviyo audiences back into TikTok ads

Klaviyo has a TikTok Audiences integration that syncs Klaviyo lists and segments to TikTok custom audiences for ad targeting. It goes from Klaviyo to TikTok, not the other way. It's useful for excluding existing subscribers from list-building ads so you aren't paying to reach people you already have.

What do I send once a TikTok fan joins my list?

A welcome series, and the first email matters most. Across 4 brands in my data, welcome email #1 earned about $4.50 per person, about 30x what emails #2 to #5 earned. So whatever offer got them to sign up should land in that first email, fast.

For a TikTok-driven sign-up, I'd make email #1 feel like the content that found them. Same product, same tone, the offer up front. Then use the rest of the series to explain why buying direct is worth it. My welcome email series post walks through the full sequence.

What does the law say about emailing these people?

In the US, CAN-SPAM sets the rules for commercial email. The FTC's compliance guide covers honest headers and subject lines, a valid physical postal address, a clear way to opt out, and honoring opt-outs within 10 business days. It says each email that breaks the law can carry penalties of up to $53,088.

The FTC's guide doesn't say you generally need prior consent to send marketing email. That's why the bigger limit for TikTok Shop sellers isn't federal email law. It's TikTok's seller rules, which you agree to when you sell there. Other countries have their own consent rules, so check before you email outside the US.

This is general information, not legal advice. Talk to a lawyer about your situation.

FAQ

Can TikTok Shop sellers get customer emails?

Not real ones. Orders synced through connectors carry an encrypted email, not the buyer's own address, and TikTok's rules say to communicate with customers only through Chat with TikTok.

Can I add TikTok Shop buyers to Klaviyo?

Not for marketing. If they show up in Klaviyo because the orders synced through Shopify, exclude them from flows and campaigns.

Why are TikTok Shop customers on my Klaviyo list?

Klaviyo syncs subscription status from Shopify. If Shopify marks TikTok-created customers as subscribed, they land on your list. Check Shopify first, then filter them out in Klaviyo.

Can I put a QR code or flyer in TikTok Shop orders?

TikTok's fulfillment guidance says to leave out marketing or promotional materials, and its shipping rules ban QR codes on labels. Check Seller Center before you print anything.

How do I build an email list from TikTok?

Use TikTok's lead generation ads connected to a Klaviyo list, and capture people who come to your own site with a good sign-up form.
